Hey look, a Mini on the streets of Germany! That probably isn?t something to get excited about, but in this case, it’s enough to cause some mild titters. You see, while the company started showing off the new Mini Coupe back in June, all of the official pictures showed the top-of-Mini-mountain John Cooper Works model. [...]

2011 Mini Cooper

Driving a manual transmission is a dying art these days. More and more automakers are moving to faster-shifting dual-clutch transmissions for performance cars, and the high-volume best-sellers only offer stick-shifts on the very base models (if at all). Of course there's Porsche, an automaker that is currently putting the finishing touches on its seven-speed manual transmission. But that's Porsche.

Mini is doing its part to promote the manual transmission by offering a $500 discount on certain stick-shift-equipped cars through the end of August. This offer applies to the stock Cooper, as well as the Clubman and Convertible (sorry, Countryman). It's a pretty sweet offer, and when you consider that manual-equipped Minis already get better fuel economy and carry lower price points than their autobox kin, this purchase decision should be an absolute no-brainer for anyone who gives a flip about driving pleasure.

Head over to Mini's website for the full details about this promotion. Thinking of buying a new Mini? Use this opportunity to spread the joy of the manual transmission before this essential piece of driver involvement goes extinct.

Rio Haryanto capitalised on a late race safety car to steal victory from Nigel Melker in the second GP3 race of the weekend at the Hungaroring. Manor driver Haryanto had charged from ninth on the grid to second by lap eight in the wet conditions, by which time pole-sitter Melker was a long way down the road. The RSC Mucke man had his lead up to 7.9 seconds when the safety car came out on lap 12, after Thomas Hylkema crashed coming out of Turn 2

bmw spartanburg assembly plant

BMW is furthering its investment in America. You already know that the German automaker builds the X3, X5 and X6 at its Spartanburg County, South Carolina assembly plant. Now, BMW is adding to that complex by introducing two new programs and hiring 100 new employees. Workers at its facility in Greer will soon have access to a brand-new family health center operated by an independent health care provider. Use of the health center will be made available to existing employees, eligible retirees and family members. In addition to the health center, BMW will begin a program called BMW Scholars, which allows area technical school students to work part-time in the assembly plant. Accepted candidates will receive tuition assistance, book money and first-hand apprentice training with a major automotive manufacturer.

Beyond the new programs, BMW is looking to bring 100 new team members on board to fill white colllar positions. These range from production managers and engineers to IT staff. The move to acquire 100 new employees is rather interesting after the negative attention from Teamsters when 100 distribution jobs were cut. Somehow, we don't see the union firing up a website to lay on applause for this one.

Ford at the 2011 Frankfut Motor Show teaser

We're inching ever closer to the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, and automakers are beginning to tease us with the wares they'll have on display in Germany. Ford has announced that the company will show off a new "major new design concept" as well more details of a hopped-up version of the Focus. The reveals will take place on the manufacturer's largest-ever Frankfurt display stand. At 34,444 square-feet indoors, visitors may need their own personal guides to shepherd them through Blue Oval's new products. Outside, Ford is also featuring a test drive track laid out on over 30,000 square feet of parking lot.

What can we expect from the design concept and the performance Focus? Details are slim at the moment. It could be the rumored coupe model, and there's always a chance that we'll learn more specs on the forthcoming Focus ST, though there's really no telling at this juncture. All in, we hear that Ford will unveil four new vehicles at the show. Look for their unveiling on September 12 and hit the jump for the press release.

McLaren duo Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton say that recent successes for their team and Ferrari have lifted hopes that Sebastian Vettel can be beaten to the world championship this year. Although Vettel still has a comfortable lead in the title standings, he has won only one out of the last four races as both McLaren and Ferrari have closed the performance gap to Red Bull Racing.
